Charles Marvin Baker

Seaman First Class

August 28, 1925 - October 24, 1944

The Shark (SS-314) was launched in 17 October 1943 and ended its patrol 24 October 1944. During her first two patrols, The Shark sank four Japanese vessels and rescued two downed US naval aviators. She then joined the brave and incredible "wolf pack" known as "Blakely's Behemoths" (The Shark was commanded by Commander E. N. Blakely who also led the wolf pack). It is believed The Shark was lost after downing a disguised Japanese prison ship. Realizing there were American lives on board, The Shark surfaced to begin its rescue. It failed to check back in later that day and was presumed lost.

Charles was a true Patriot from the earliest age. Born in Boston, MA. and raised in Forest Hills, NY, he was studying agricultural science at Penn State. When the war broke out, he left college and rushed to join the military to protect his country and our future. He was a rare breed who volunteered for the elite and notoriously difficult position of serving on a submarine. Charles was awarded the Purple Heart for his valor,

Charles is remembered today by his sister Joyce Roman Lerner and her children and future generations. He will always be a hero to the family for it is his sacrifice that allowed us to enjoy the freedoms we have today.
